Praise the Lord!

Welcome to the information portal for Hemingway Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church in District Heights, Maryland! We are so pleased that you have taken the time to visit and to become familiar with Hemingway’s mission and its ministry.

Our Mission is to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional needs of all people by spreading the Gospel of Christ through preaching, teaching and good stewardship. In interpreting our Mission, the Pastoral Vision focuses our ministry and community involvement on a central theme, “Committed to Kingdom Building through Word, Worship, Work and Witness.”

Hemingway Memorial is a church family committed to Christian ministry. We offer more than 24 ministry opportunities, led by persons committed to building Christ’s Kingdom. We are an intimate, caring Church with a wonderful compulsion to love like God loves! From our Evangelism and Outreach ministries to our Music ministry; from our Youth ministry to the Pillars Senior Ministry, from the Boys’ and Girls’ Rites of Passage Groups to the Men’s and Women’s Ministries, our Church is committed to providing a way for God’s people to grow in relationship with and in service to Him!

Our five weekly study opportunities (Sunday School, Wednesday Noon Hour of Power, Pastor’s Bible Study, and Men’s & Women’s Bible Study) along with our Intercessory Prayer Group (Touch & Agree Ministry) are strengthening and are critical to empowering us to be strong and bold in a world uprooted.

Come and join us in our quest to be all we can be for God, as we remain faithful to His mandate to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.

Ministerial Profile
Reverend Dr. Samuel E. Hayward, III
Reverend Dr. Samuel E. Hayward, III was born into a ministry family and is a fourth generation A.M.E. preacher. He was a child of the parsonage and his father, the Reverend Samuel Hayward, was a pastor in the Bermuda Annual Conference of the First Episcopal District. As a child, he was nurtured and trained as a YPDer and a youth lay leader at Vernon Temple AMEC in Southampton, Bermuda. In 1970 he was licensed as a local preacher at Vernon Temple AMEC, and was later admitted to the Western North Carolina Annual Conference in the Second Episcopal District, under the tutelage of Bishop Philip R. Cousin (then Pastor Cousin). Pastor Hayward was ordained as an itinerant elder by Bishop Henry Wendell Murph in 1974 in the North Carolina Conference.
Pastor Hayward completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Kittrell College, Hampton University, Trinity Theological Seminary, and the University of Miami where he received certification in Drug Abuse Counseling. He was inducted as a member of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor National Honor Society in 1995, and in 2012, Pastor Hayward was bestowed the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by the Seminary of the Apostles of Norfolk, VA.
God has blessed Pastor Hayward with an outstanding pastoral gift which he treasures. He has been assigned to pastor a total of seven AME congregations during his 42 years of pastoral ministry. As Pastor, he led St. James AMEC, Kinston, NC and Macedonia AMEC, Accomac, VA in building new sanctuaries. He assisted in establishing a new church (Bethlehem AMEC, Baltimore, MD); and nurtured and mentored more than 40 sons and daughters in Christian Ministry over the course of his ministerial career. Pastor Hayward has a particular gift of counseling ministers who are broken and in need of loving support. God uses him to bring about restoration and wholeness in the lives of ministers and their families.
Pastor Hayward has been an active leader in the AME Church in several areas of service. For many quadrennials, he has served as a delegate to the General Conference of the AME Church. He is a member of the Washington Conference Board of Trustees, Washington Conference Finance Committee, and the Washington Conference Board of Examiners. He served as Chief Secretary of the Virginia Annual Conference, AME Church for more than 15 years.
Currently, Pastor Hayward serves as Senior Pastor of Hemingway Memorial A.M.E. Church in District Heights, Maryland. He was assigned to Hemingway Memorial on May 7, 2005. Hemingway is experiencing exceptional spiritual growth under his guidance; new ministries have been implemented and inactive ministries have been reactivated. As a part of Hemingway’s commitment to Evangelism and Outreach, under Pastor Hayward’s leadership, Hemingway partners with a Latino community pastor to establish a Latino congregation that worships at the Church; has established neighborhood door-to-door evangelism campaigns; and annual training and re-tooling leadership retreats for ministerial staff and church leaders.
Pastor Hayward is married to the love of his life, the Reverend Althea J. Hayward. Their union of more than 41 years has produced two daughters: Kimberly Hayward and the Reverend Kristina Hayward. Pastor Hayward is the eldest of six siblings, all of whom are ministers, and all of whom are married to ministers. He is a dynamic, spirit-filled preacher of the Gospel and is a committed, loving pastor, faithful friend, and brother. More than all of the above, he is a child of God who is committed to and excited about preaching and teaching God’s Word!
